Scout Member Highlight: Erin Rufledt of Luminary Lab
We are incredibly lucky to have an amazing group of talented individuals that call Scout Workshop their work home. Through this community our goal is to encourage collaboration and help to shine a light on all of the incredible work that these people are producing.
For our first member highlight we sat down with Erin Rufledt owner of Luminary Lab, a communication design studio with a team of independent creative strategists, designers, writers, and visual storytellers helping clients develop their message and craft a compelling story that builds momentum, sparks connections, and inspires action.
Pretty cool, right?!
So Erin, tell us about yourself...
What gets you out of bed in the morning? My running shoes. Running clears my head and gives me time to think (or, not think). The rhythm is meditative. It’s become a mental health practice for me as much as a physical one...a way of sort of reorienting myself around what’s important.
Do you have a personal mantra or motto? “Live the questions.” It’s a line from the poet Rainer Maria Rilke.
What are you currently working on? Finding ways to make business communication and storytelling easier and more intuitive for small businesses. So many people are doing amazing work, but finding the right words to capture the magic in what you do and communicate it to the outside world can be really tricky.
All time favorite project? A few months ago I got to work with The New York Times on an internal design research project on voice assistant technology and the future of media. It was fascinating to get a look into that world. And as a designer, I totally geeked out on getting to use the NYT Magazine fonts in the things we created!
Why did you choose to become a member of Scout Workshop? A lot of my days are spent working solo, and it can get pretty lonely. For a long time, I imagined joining or building a coworking community that had all the things that felt most important to me: a small tribe of smart and generous creative people, a truly supportive and collaborative vibe, a light-filled space that could accommodate different kinds of work. I had a pretty specific dreamy ideal, and honestly wasn’t sure that such a thing existed. Happily, I was wrong. :)
Ok, we have a few more...just for fun!
If you were a baseball player, what would be your walk-on song? DJ Khaled’s “All I Do Is Win.” Or the opening song from The Greatest Showman.
What would you name the autobiography of your life? Working Title.
If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would it be? Probably Michelle Obama. If she could bring Barack along too, that’d be swell.
If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor? Lin-Manuel Miranda.
